History of the Three Sisters Circuit
The Three Sisters Circuit, located in Ashton-in-Makerfield near Wigan, Lancashire, has a rich history tied to the area’s industrial past. The circuit gets its name from the three large spoil heaps left from the Garswood Hall Colliery, which operated from 1867 until 1958. These heaps, also known as the “Wigan Alps,” were transformed into a 44-hectare country park in the 1970s, which includes the race circuit.
The reclamation project began in the late 1960s, driven by Lancashire County Council and later taken over by Greater Manchester Council. The transformation was completed by Wigan Metropolitan Borough, leading to the opening of the Three Sisters Recreation Area in November 1978. This area now includes a country park, a lake, and the race circuit, surrounded by thriving woodland and wetlands.
The circuit quickly became a hub for motorsport activities, initially attracting karting and motorcycle racing. Over the years, it has hosted a variety of events, including drifting, Supermoto, ACU motorbike racing, car rallies, and sprints. Notable motorsport figures, such as Neil Hodgson and James Toseland, began their careers at Three Sisters Circuit. Additionally, the circuit was one of the venues for McLaren Mercedes’ Champions of the Future series in 2006, which helped discover talents like Lewis Hamilton and Gary Paffett.
In recent years, the circuit underwent significant upgrades, including resurfacing work in 2018, to ensure safety and maintain its status as a premier motorsport venue.
